Sod prices fluctuate throughout the year and also geographically. The most affordable way to get sod is to buy it from a local sod farmer. If you can pick it up yourself, you can usually get it for whole sale prices. Otherwise, the fewer miles the sod travels to get to you, the better shape it will be in when it arrives and the less energy was expended it getting it there (which sometimes translates to reduced cost).

People who don’t want to deal with tearing up the old yard and preparing the soil for new sod, or with having to load and unload heavy rolls of sod will want to contact a sod contractor. This typically doubles the price, and is worth it for many people.
